Excel NE Composting Toilet

Overview
The success of the Excel composting toilet design meant that a three-chamber unit could be specifically designed for those with no access to continuous 110/220 volt supply. First launched in 1981, the Excel NE composting toilet has long been the standard toilet for those living off the grid. The Excel NE is designed to be used when you no conventional electricity.
Installations include, but are not limited to: cabins, cottages, homes, yurts, pool houses, cabanas, bunkies, camps, treehouses and workshops. The Excel NE has no electrical components and uses a 4″ vent stack to provide odorless ventilation. Click here to view the Excel NE in our webstore.

10+ years and going strong!
I have an Excel NE, so I hope this is the correct model I’m reviewing. I own a small, off-grid island in northern Ontario. There was no possibility of having a regular toilet, due to the rocky surface necessitating an above-ground septic tank. (Not only the insightliness, but also the challenge of having an island septic tank serviced, made that option unsatisfactory.).
Happily, my SunMar composting toilet is an awesone substitute. We’re typically there every 2nd or 3rd weekend from May ‘til October, but have been there for a few weeks, at times, or had large groups for a few days. I even lived there for four months, in 2005. It handled it all very well.
The only criticisms I have are the ease of which the material forms into balls, which hold their shape even in the finisher; the large size; the price (although, with over a decade of use so far, the cost-per-use is low); as well as the handle’s tendency to to want to slide back into its groove, while turning. I am keenly aware of this latter fact, so I keep tension on the handle, pulling it towards me as I rotate it. But not everyone understands this, and I’m dreading the day I show-up and find a chunk of plastic snapped-off the handle or the unit. (I hate broken things.) Surely, a design adjustment could prevent this from happening, rather than relying on the user to remember to apply outward pressure while also turning. I think I’ve put an adequate amount if fear into everyone, which is why it hasn’t happened yet.
Do I recomnend this product? So much, yes! I keep wondering why this product isn’t mass-produced for countries where open pit elimination and outhouses are still commonplace? The user experience of this product is so similar to a standard toilet, it is probably the best choice for anyone wanting or needing to live greener. (Verified Home Hardware review)
We’re very satisfied with the performance of the units and like the fact that the toilet facilities are never going to destroy our business’ most precious resource – nature!
We were so pleased with our first Excel-NE that we now have more than ten in operation at our camp, Omagaki Wilderness Lodge. We entertain hundreds of visitors every season at our beautiful remote location in the Ottawa valley which runs entirely on solar energy.
We’ve had our Sun-Mar Excel-NE just over a year and are very pleased with the results
Our cottage near Seeley’s Bay, Ontario is very rustic with no electricity or running water/septic. No mess, no smell, and much more pleasant than the “outhouse”
It was very easy to install and has been maintenance and odor free for all year
Our Sun-Mar NE composting toilet has been the perfect addition to our summer and weekend retreat. Thanks to you for everything but the “pleasure” is all ours.
