Home » Can I use my Sun-Mar composting toilet if I have solar power?

Generators and solar panels are often an integral part of ensuring you have a comfortable, warm stay in your off-grid home away from home. With the wide range of options for power capabilities, a question that our sales team gets a lot at shows and in our showroom is, ‘Can I use an electric Sun-Mar toilet if I have a generator or solar panel array?’

The short answer is no. We do not recommend using an electric Sun-Mar toilet in an installation where a solar array or a generator is your primary source of power.

But what if I only have solar power?

With this in mind, Sun-Mar has some alternative solutions that do not require a conventional power supply. One such solution is the Excel NE, or non-electric, which has a comparable capacity to the electric Excel. It has an optional 12 volt fan that can be installed in-line and powered by a battery and solar panel.

The second solution is the AC/DC Conversion kit, which allows electric toilets like the Excel, and the CENTREX 2000 and 3000 toilets, to be modified so they can function without electricity. This is usually best used in installations where there is inconsistent power available (ie. rolling blackouts, etc).

I have questions, what next?

Either one of these options would be suitable for an off-grid or remote cabin or cottage, and could be easily installed. If you have any questions on the Excel NE or any other of our toilets, please contact our sales department at 1 888 341 0782, option 1, or via email at sales@sun-mar.com.

If you have an existing electric toilet and have questions about whether the AC/DC Conversion kit could be worked into your installation, please call our customer service department* at 1 888 341 0782, option 4, or via email at service@sun-mar.com.

Why switch to a Sun-Mar?

Switching to a Sun-Mar composting toilet system isn’t just about off-grid practicality—it’s also a smart move for anyone looking to lighten their environmental footprint. These innovative systems offer several notable environmental advantages, especially compared to traditional flushing toilets:

Conserves Water: Sun-Mar composting toilets use little to no water, helping you significantly reduce overall consumption. This is a major plus in remote areas, or if you’re working with a limited water supply.

Reduces Pollution: By separating waste on-site, Sun-Mar composting toilets help prevent contamination of local water sources, which is a concern with conventional septic or sewage systems that can leak or overflow.

Cuts Down on Chemical Use: There’s no need for harsh cleaning agents or chemicals that can end up in groundwater.

Creates Usable Compost: Over time, Sun-Mar composting toilet systems transform waste into nutrient-rich compost, which can be used to enrich soil in non-edible gardens, closing the natural nutrient loop rather than sending waste out to a landfill or treatment plant.

Lowers Carbon Footprint: With less reliance on pumps, treatment plants, and water, composting toilets offer a lower-energy alternative—making them appealing for eco-minded homeowners and travelers alike.

By choosing a Sun-Mar composting system, you’re not only making your off-grid setup run smoother, you’re actively working to conserve valuable resources and reduce environmental impact. To learn more about Sun-Mar and the wide range of composting toilets we offer, check out our Youtube channel!
