The first Central composting unit, the WCM, is designed and launched.

The first three-chamber composting toilet with a drum is introduced.

Production moves to North America.

The Bio-Drum design proves so successful that the first non-electric unit is introduced.

1989
World First
The Excel becomes the first self-contained composting toilet to pass the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) long term composting tests. Today the Excel remains the only such unit listed to these strict standards.

The first dual vented unit (AC/DC) is introduced for use with a non-continuous 110 Volt power supply.

1994
Technical Leadership
Sun-Mar awarded US patent for Bio-Drum design.

World First
Sun-Mar introduces the Sun-Mar Mobile, the first self-contained composting toilet for Marine and RV markets.

1997
World First
The first continuous flow composting toilet system is introduced by Sun-Mar. This high capacity unit automatically moves the compost through the unit and into a collection chamber as the drum rotates.

Technical Leadership
Sun-Mar awarded US patent for double drum.

Technical Leadership
Sun-Mar awarded US patent for continuous flow design for self-contained units.

2006

Double drum technology used to produce Sun-Mar 200 and 400 Garden Composters.
